Expanding Access to Care: Medicis Pharmacy to Open Second Location in Southwest Louisiana

Medicis Pharmacy, one of just nine pharmacies in Louisiana authorized to dispense medical marijuana, has revealed plans to launch a second location to better serve the increasing number of patients in the Southwest region. This area encompasses Lake Charles and the parishes of Calcasieu, Beauregard, Jefferson Davis, Allen, and Cameron.
On June 5, Louisiana legislators passed House Bill 697, a new law that permits pharmacies holding medical marijuana licenses to expand their footprint based on patient demand. Under this legislation, each of the state’s nine designated pharmacies can establish up to two additional locations within their assigned regions, provided specific patient thresholds are met. The process begins when a region’s prescription monitoring program records 3,500 active, qualified patients—at that point, the pharmacy in that region may open a second site. If both the original and second locations each serve 3,500 active patients, the licensee can then open a third dispensary.

The pharmacy has already taken steps to broaden its reach in 2022, notably through the introduction of delivery services. The inclusion of cannabis flower as an approved medication since January has further fueled demand, driving a surge in new patient registrations and creating supply challenges. By establishing a second location along the I-10 corridor, Medicis Pharmacy aims to enhance access to cannabis-based treatments for participants in Louisiana’s medical marijuana program, ensuring that more patients can benefit from these therapies.
