Briton Jack Draper battles from a set down to overcome two-time champion Matteo Berrettini in the Stuttgart final, becoming a first-time ATP title-winner at the Tennis Club Weissenhof on Sunday.
Sixth seed Jack Draper completed a flawless run on the German grass courts in Stuttgart with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 triumph over former world No. 6 Matteo Berrettini to lift his maiden career trophy on Tour.
After the final encounter, he shared: “It’s incredible. It was a really tough match. But I’m really happy to win my first title. It means so much to me.”
“There have been a lot of up and down moments over the last few years, but this is a testament to the hard work I’ve been putting in,” added the player mentored by James Trotman, recently joined by former Frances Tiafoe coach, Wayne Ferreira.
Following his most significant career result, the new BOSS Open champion has guaranteed his debut as Britain’s new number one on Monday.
Moreover, the Sutton born, who entered the event ranked at No. 40, will rise to a career-high of No. 30, likely to be seeded at his home Grand Slam, The Championships.
The 22-year-old hit the court on Sunday to compete in his second final this season, the first on a grass surface and the third on an ATP 250 level in his young career.
Draper delivered high-level tennis all week, impressing with his performance at the tournament that opens the grass-court swing, leading to Wimbledon.
He booked his ticket to the final by defeating American Brandon Nakashima in straight sets and without facing a lone break point throughout the contest.
The route to the championship match featured victories over defending champion Tiafoe, unseeded Marcos Giron, and Austrian player Sebastian Ofner.
For his part, Berrettini made a solid return to tour-level competition, sidelined since April due to a series of injuries.
The Italian, a former Wimbledon runner-up, tends to find his best tennis on the grass courts, and despite the setbacks he has experienced, in Stuttgart it was no different, reaching his third final at the tournament.
The Roman native advanced to the final, having dropped only one set, putting to good use his big serve to move past his opponents.
During the trophy ceremony, the 28-year-old said: “Congrats to Jack. Unbelievable week. Unbelievable match. I was so close.”
“This one is going to hurt for a little bit, but that’s tennis. I’ve won matches like this, I’ve lost matches like this. I’m sure this guy is going to lift more trophies.”
Next, the prestigious ATP 500 cinch Championships, held at The Queen’s Club in West Kensington, awaits the champion.
Draper is set to open his campaign at the event in London against in-form Argentine Mariano Navone, eyeing a potential second-round clash with reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz.
