More than 100 people were celebrating the New Year in the Constellation Bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans Montana when an explosion occurred at 1.30am and a fire broke out.
A spokesperson for the cantonal police explained, “We see many injured and many dead.” When asked how this could have happened, it was said to be an “explosion of unknown cause.” Swiss media are reporting several explosions and one suggestion is that pyrotechnics at a concert may have caused the fire.
Numerous rescue teams are working at the scene of the accident. The fire is now under control.
Several injured people have serious burns and are being treated in local hospitals. Exact details of the number and identity of the victims are not yet available. A hotline has been set up for relatives +41 848 112 117.
