Institute of Chemical Technology Launches Tinkerers’ Lab to Foster Innovation in Chemical Engineering

Mumbai, Maharashtra – May 16, 2025 – In a move to equip students with hands-on skills in a chemical lab environment, the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) has inaugurated its very own Tinkerers’ Lab. The lab is designed to promote hands-on learning and innovation among chemical engineering students. Established with funding from Alkyl Amines Chemicals Limited, the lab is part of the company’s CSR initiative, supported by the Maker Bhavan Foundation (MBF) from California, USA.

A Platform for Innovation and Skill Development

The Tinkerers’ Lab aims to provide students with a conducive environment for experimenting, collaborating, and creating innovative solutions in the field of chemical engineering. The lab is set to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling students to gain valuable experience in solving real-world challenges.

Padma Vibhushan awardee and Emeritus Professor of Eminence at ICT, Prof. M.M. Sharma, inaugurated the lab, along with Padma Bhushan Prof. J.B. Joshi as the Guest of Honour. The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries such as Shri Yogesh M. Kothari, Chairman and Managing Director of Alkyl Amines Chemicals Limited, Prof. A.B. Pandit, Vice Chancellor of ICT, Mumbai, and Dr. Hemant Kanakia, Founder of MBF.

Prof. M.M. Sharma: Innovation is Key to Economic Growth

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. M.M. Sharma emphasized the importance of fostering creativity and collaboration in academia. He stated, “Our country needs platforms where people can explore their creativity, collaborate with others, and develop innovative solutions. This Tinkerers’ Lab at ICT will create an ecosystem that drives economic and social progress. Countries that fail to innovate stagnate, and we cannot afford that.”

The Tinkerers’ Lab aligns with the goals of Industry 4.0, a key driver of technological transformation in industries worldwide. Yogesh M. Kothari, Chairman and Managing Director of Alkyl Amines, noted, “The fast-paced technological advancements we are witnessing demand access to resources and tools that foster innovation.
