Karnataka government approved a bill against online betting; all you need to know

It seems using online betting apps might put you behind the bar in Karnataka as the government has announced a ban on the use of gaming apps that are indulged in online betting or making money via gaming. On September 5th, the cabinet of Karnataka decided to ban all online gambling or betting apps by giving a green signal to the bill filed by the Karnataka police.

According to the reports, the Karnataka government has passed this bill under Karnataka Police Act, 1963. However, do note that the new bill will not affect the lottery or betting on horse races, as per Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J.C. Madhuswamy.

“We are amending the Karnataka Police Act, with an intention to put an end to online gambling, on the basis of the High Court directions. The cabinet has approved the amendments, it will be placed before the assembly,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J.C. Madhuswamy.

As per Madhuswamy, the decision was taken into consideration after the High Court of Karnataka repeatedly asked the state government to take necessary action against online betting.

“Involving all forms of wagering or betting including in the form of tokens valued in terms of money paid before or after the issue of it, or electronic means and virtual currency, electronic transfer of funds in connection with any game of chance,” reads the bill.

The bill against online betting stated that anyone found guilty while using the betting apps or platforms will be considered as criminal activity. The bill also confirmed that this could attract imprisonment of either up to three years or a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

“The bill will be tabled in the monsoon session (starting September 13),” law and parliamentary affairs minister JC Madhuswamy said.  It seems that the State government is very serious about the new law and if you’re indulged in online betting apps then it’s time to leave such a habit.
