India-Guyana announce the launch of a Chamber of Commerce

New Delhi [India], June 16: In a significant move to enhance economic cooperation between India and Guyana, the India/Guyana Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) has been launched in Guyana. The chamber was inaugurated by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during his recent visit to Guyana, alongside Guyanese President His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali at a business roundtable held in George Town, Guyana.

The IGCC is set to foster deeper private sector engagement in infrastructure development and business growth, with a focus on strengthening investment and trade between India and Guyana. The chamber will also promote technology transfer, cultural exchange, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability between the two nations.

In a landmark development, former West Indies cricket captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has been appointed the President of the India/Guyana Chamber of Commerce. The leadership team also includes Steven Jacobs, Kalamazad Ibrahim, and David Fernandes as Senior Vice Presidents, Shaleeza Shaw as the Treasurer, Saju Bhaskar, Founder and President of Texila American University Consortium, as the Secretary, and Sreebala Kumar, Joint Secretary and Director of Ekaa Hrim Earth Resources Management Operations.

In his address at the inauguration, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to partnering with Guyana, especially in diversifying its economy beyond the oil and gas sector. He noted that the key focus areas for the IGCC will include agriculture, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, defence cooperation, human resource development, innovation, and infrastructure development, aiming to create strategic partnerships that benefit both countries.

Expressing his excitement, Ramnaresh Sarwan, the newly appointed President of IGCC, shared: “I am honored and thrilled to be selected as the first president of this chamber. With the historical ties between Guyana and India, this relationship holds great potential for business growth. Our goal is to ensure that every Guyanese citizen has access to numerous opportunities, while also providing Indian businesses with valuable prospects in Guyana.”

Saju Bhaskar, Secretary of IGCC and President of Texila American University Consortium, stated, “The IGCC will provide a platform for business leaders from both India and Guyana to connect, network, and collaborate. The chamber aims to open new trade, investment, and joint venture opportunities in sectors such as energy, technology, and agriculture, while helping Guyana’s investment market reach new heights. By supporting members through resources, trade forums, and business visits, IGCC will contribute to the economic growth of both nations.”
