A bottleneck in PM Modi’s dream project Bullet Train was removed on Friday. The Bombay High Court has given conditional permission to cut 21,997 mangrove trees for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The court said that five times the number of trees would have to be planted to compensate for this damage to the environment. The trees allowed by the court to be cut are in Thane and Palghar districts. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), which is making the track of the bullet train, had filed a public interest litigation in the High Court to cut these trees. The case was being heard by a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice Abhay Ahuja.

The court had said – reduce the number of trees to be cut
The court said that the company will have to comply with the conditions of the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority along with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change while felling mangrove trees. Earlier, the court had ordered NHSRCL to reduce the number of mangrove trees to be cut. On this, the counsel appearing for NHSRCL told the court that earlier more than 53 thousand trees were to be cut, now their number has been reduced to 21,997.

With the arrival of the bullet train, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad journey will reduce from 6:30 hours to 2:30 hours.

An NGO named Bombay Environmental Action Group opposed NHSRCL’s plea. He said in the court that no court study has been done regarding the survival of the trees that will be planted. At the same time, the assessment report of the impact on the environment due to felling of mangrove trees has also not been given in the court.

Supreme Court bans cutting of mangrove trees
In a 2018 order, the Supreme Court had banned the felling of mangrove trees in Maharashtra. However, the court had also said that if these trees are cut in the public interest, permission will have to be taken from the court. After this, in 2020, NHSRCL filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court seeking permission to cut these trees. He also said that five times as many trees would be planted as would be cut.
