Director- Nitesh TiwariStars- Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Anjuman Saxena, Mukesh TiwariPlatform- Amazon Prime Video”Ek hum hain, head koi talwar nahi latak rahi hai, still not happy.. because we forget to live life” Gone…” Nisha tells her husband Ajju aka Ajay during their trip to Europe. Both are saddened to hear the story of Anne Frank in Amsterdam and dare to peep into their lives somewhere. Nitesh Tiwari specializes in showing the nuances of emotions that arise in relationships. Be it Dangal or Chhichhore, the director has brought out the relationships in the best way. And we see the same glimpse here as well. The film is about embracing the small joys in life. The story Ajay Dixit (Varun Dhawan) is known for saying that “Ajju Bhaiya is in a crowd of gray pigeons with a smile”. His exploits are discussed in the entire city of Lucknow. How Ajju Bhaiya left the IAS exam and decided to become a teacher, how he could not join the army due to health reasons, how the people of NASA were rejected etc. etc. Ajju had built such a wall of lies and appearances across the city that everyone started thinking of him as great. But Ajju used to run away from those who knew the truth, parents and wife Nisha (Janhvi Kapoor). Despite having a relationship between Ajay and Nisha, there is no relationship. However, Ajay, a history teacher in a private school, once gets caught in such an incident that he has to plan something big to get out of there. In this plan, he has to take support of Nisha and both leave for Europe tour. They visit places that are associated with World War II. But during the journey, along with the war in the world, he also feels the war going on inside him. But will Ajju embrace their relationship, leaving behind his ego and selfishness? The story revolves around this. Direction and technical side The writing of “Bawal” is so excellent that the film directly touches your heart. Its story is written by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, and she has very sensitively shown the dilemma between a couple. The writer has a huge responsibility to keep a film like Bawal effective for two and a half hours. Nitesh Tiwari has done a good job in this matter. He has kept the dialogue of the film very strong, be it between husband-wife, or mother-daughter or mother-in-law-father-in-law. In one scene, Nisha’s mother tells him- “Jis din laga na ki ab nahi nibhaa, laut aana beta, koi kuch nahin kahenga, divorce koi hua nahi hai son”. Shows that your eyes are filled with tears. There are many such small moments in the film. There is no over-the-top drama anywhere in the film. The film goes a little up and down on the emotional level in the first half, but is very strong in the second half. Many questions were being raised about the connection of the love story with World War 2 and Hitler in particular, but the point here is not just about the love story, but about the battle going on inside our hearts, which we fight every day. Charu Shree Roy’s editing is tight, which keeps the film gripping till the end. Some scenes in the film are emotional while some are excellent comic relief. ACTING The positive aspects of this film include the performances. Ajay Dixit is a simple boy living in Lucknow, who is always in fear of losing the respect he has earned. Or simply say that he is afraid of being average in life. Varun Dhawan gives his best as an inept teacher along with a selfish husband and son. The director has given a lot of emotional ups and downs in his character and Varun is seen connecting with every emotion. He looks confident in one scene, scared in another, emotional in one moment, angry and arrogant in another. On the other hand, Janhvi Kapoor has supported Varun equally everywhere. Janhvi has a good hold on emotional scenes. The best part is that both the actors look very comfortable in their characters. The chemistry of both is good, which helps in keeping the story tied. All the actors including Manoj Pahwa, Anjuman Saxena, Mukesh Tiwari are excellent in supporting characters.RatingIf you want to watch something great on OTT this weekend, then definitely watch Varun Dhawan-Janhvi Kapoor starrer Baawal.
